Reseda – 500 gram
reseda (Reseda luteola) – 100 grams
Woad, also known as Reseda luteola, is an ancient dye plant that imparts a bright and intense yellow color to wool. Woad has a rich history as a natural dye and has been used since antiquity to color textiles. The plant originally comes from the Mediterranean region, but later spread across Europe, Asia, and parts of North Africa.
During the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, woad was one of the most valuable plants for obtaining yellow shades. It was widely used in the textile industry, both for clothing and for dyeing carpets and other fabrics. The deep, rich yellow hues were highly sought after, especially because this dye was rare and therefore considered a luxury product.
How to use Woad:
Pre-mordanting: To achieve the best results, it is recommended to mordant your wool with alum before dyeing. This helps the color adhere better to the fibers, making the dye last longer and intensifying the color.
Dyeing process: Soak the dried materials 24 hours in advance before adding them to the dye bath. For the strongest, most vibrant yellow shades, use 100 grams of reseda per 100 grams of wool. This will produce the deepest, most intense colors.
Reusing the dye bath: After the first dyeing session, you can reuse the dye bath 1-2 times to create softer, lighter yellow tones. The more times you reuse the bath, the lighter the final color will be.
Tips:
The intensity of the color can vary depending on the pH and hardness of the dye bath water.
Keep in mind that, as with any natural dye, the final color results may vary depending on the type of wool, the mordant used, and other factors such as water quality and temperature.
