Silk scarfs

They can be used as play cloths, seasonal table decorations, or, of course, as scarves. Silk has a wonderfully soft and luxurious feel.

Our scarves are hand-dyed using natural plant dyes. Due to the hand-dyeing process, slight color variations may occur. Always wash silk scarves by hand in cold water, using a mild wool detergent if necessary. When not in use, store them in a dark place to preserve their colors. Naturally dyed fabrics may fade over time if exposed to strong UV light for extended periods.

Despite thorough rinsing, small plant residues may occasionally remain.

In addition to the webshop stock, I also have a market stock of silk scarves. If your preferred color is unavailable or out of stock, feel free to send me a message!

The yarn is well-suited for card weaving, embroidery, and sewing, but can also be used for crochet and knitting. It combines well with the old 20/4 yarn, as it is virtually the same.

The skeins are:

∙ 50 grams / 250 meters
∙ 100% wool
∙ NM 20/4
∙ GOTS certified (note: this applies to the un-dyed product)
∙ Introductory price until 01-01-2024: €8.95, after that €9.50

If there is a color out of stock or if you would like to order more than what is available, feel free to send me a message. I have extra stock that still needs to be wound.

----------
Item numbers for the weaving yarn:

Due to the new weaving yarn, the yarns will be renumbered. The numbers with an "S" are standard colors, and I will ensure these are always in stock. Additionally, I have other colors, but these are limited stock, and while they may be dyed again, they often involve mixed colors, which can be harder to match exactly.

Undyed & Natural Fabrics – Perfect for Natural DyeingOur undyed and natural fabrics are ideal for anyone interested in working with plant-based dyeing techniques. Of course, these fabrics can also be used as they are – their raw, natural look is beautiful even without added color.

Because the fabrics are not chemically treated or pre-dyed, they absorb color in a natural and even way.

Please note: before you start dyeing, it’s important to thoroughly wash the fabric to remove any natural oils or residues. After that, mordanting is recommended to help the dye bond more effectively with the fibers and ensure long-lasting, vibrant results.

Why choose our natural fabrics?

∙ 100% natural and undyed – no additives, just pure material
∙ Excellent dye absorption – for rich, lasting color
∙ Suitable for a wide range of dyeing techniques
∙ Available in various qualities and weave structures

Would you like to try our fabrics before placing a larger order? No problem!
Feel free to send us an email via www.speerbijter.nl with your request, and we’ll gladly send you a free sample. This way, you can feel the material yourself and see if it’s the right fit for your project.

Leg wraps were used by the Vikings, Celts, and Romans.

The leg wraps we sell are woven in herringbone or diamond twill patterns. This weaving creates diagonal stretch, which helps the wraps stay in place. You can also secure the leg wraps with a fibula, a pin, or a card-woven band.

Are you interested in purchasing full rolls of leg wraps for your business? I offer special prices for businesses if you have a VAT number.

Who Am I – and Where Does the Name Speerbijter Come From?My journey into the world of natural dyeing began thanks to my husband, who introduced me to Viking re-enactment and the traditional crafts that come with it. I quickly became fascinated by the vibrant colours you can create using plants. We mostly work with dyes that were used in the early medieval period, though occasionally I use modern alternatives when needed.

After years of experimenting, I started bringing my naturally dyed wool to historical markets—and each year, our collection has grown. By now, I’ve been dyeing wool with plants for over 15 years.

----------
So… What Does Speerbijter Mean? The name was born during a summer stay at the Viking Centre in Ribe, Denmark. Our oldest son was just two years old at the time. Our market stall was still small then, with baskets of wool laid out on the ground. In one photo, you can see him sitting inside a wool basket, happily chewing on one of my husband's spears that was propped against the tent.

The stallholders across from us started calling him Speerbijter – literally, “Spear Biter”. That same summer, we were trying to come up with a name for our stall, and well… Speerbijter stuck.

Over the years, we’ve often wondered if we should change it to something more descriptive, but somehow, we always come back to it. So Speerbijter it is – and will likely always be.

Naturally Dyed Wool – About Colour Fastness & CareHistorically, wool was dyed using plants and natural materials, resulting in beautiful, earthy tones. It wasn’t until the last century that synthetic dyes became common – mainly because they’re cheaper, easier to produce, and offer stronger resistance to fading.

That said, natural dyes can be surprisingly durable. The plants I use have been trusted throughout history and are known for their relatively good colour fastness.
Still, nature has its quirks – colours may soften slightly over time. Yellows are particularly sensitive to light.
Tip: avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight when storing or drying your wool.
----------
Washing InstructionsWool Yarns

Naturally dyed wool should be washed by hand, using a mild wool detergent. Although the yarns are thoroughly rinsed after dyeing, a little colour bleeding may still occur during the first few washes.
Let the wool dry indoors, away from direct sunlight.Silk Scarves

Silk is delicate and should be treated gently. Wash your scarf by hand in cold water, preferably with a mild detergent that does not contain lanolin.
Avoid drying in the sun – hang your scarf indoors in a shaded area.
----------
About VinegarAlthough vinegar is often recommended to "set" colours, we advise against soaking naturally dyed wool or silk in vinegar. During the dyeing process, I sometimes use vinegar or ammonia intentionally to shift the colour tones. Soaking the finished piece in vinegar can disrupt these subtle effects or even undo them.
