Madder Root, Chopped – 100 gram
Madder Root (Cut) – 100 Grams
With dried madder root, you can achieve beautiful red to salmon-colored shades. For the best results, it is recommended to mordant the wool with alum beforehand. This helps the dye adhere better to the fibers, ensuring the color lasts longer and appears deeper and more vibrant.
Madder is an ancient dye plant originally from Asia. The plant was introduced to the Netherlands by the Romans and has been used for centuries to dye textiles, particularly to achieve deep and rich red tones. Before the advent of synthetic dyes, madder was one of the most important natural dyes for producing red hues.
Madder belongs to the granth teint/category 1 class of dyes, meaning that the color it produces is a true pigment that doesn’t fade easily. It’s a dye known for maintaining its vibrancy and intensity over time.
How to Use:
Mordanting: Mordant the wool with alum for a more intense and long-lasting color.
Dyeing Process: For the brightest and most intense colors, use 100 to 150 grams of madder root per 100 grams of wool. This will give you the deepest and most vibrant shades.
Reusing the Dye Bath: After the first dye bath, you can reuse it 1 to 2 more times for lighter shades. The more times the bath is used, the lighter the final color will be.
Tips:
The intensity of the color can vary depending on the pH and hardness of the water in the dye bath.
Keep in mind that, as with all natural dyes, final color results can vary depending on the type of wool, the mordant used, and other factors such as water quality and temperature.
